January Focus

Weight watchers

With the cold weather and frequent snow falls, the frequency of our walks with our pets outdoors dwindle. This is why around this time of year our furry friends seem to gain what is referred to as “Winter Weight”. This winter weight is unhealthy for our pets which means we, as pets owners, should do our best to prevent further weight gain over the winter season. The reality is however, that pets gain weight all year round. Obesity isn’t seasonal and shouldn’t be treated as such. Even though obesity is addressed more frequently during those inactive winter months, fighting obesity is an everyday, all year-round battle. Not sure if your pet is overweight? Take a look at our Ask the Vet webpage to read the article Is Your Pet Overweight to help you decide.

Some of the information above along with further info on diets, is compiled in our reader friendly handout titled Pet Obesity Presentation.
