North Hill Animal Hospital’s History
North Hill Animal Hospital has been helping pets in the Bolton and surrounding area since 1986. The hospital, at that time treated all types of animals from cats, to cows and dogs to horses. In 1989 the practice shifted its attention to only dogs and cats with the occasional rabbit, mouse and gerbil. During the past 25 years we have grown considerably and have had the distinct honor to help care for thousands of pets and their families.
North Hill animal Hospital initially operated from a century home at the corner of Hwy 50 and Columbia Way. At that site we had 1 acre of grass to walk dogs and see the occasional deer and since we were right next to the Humber Valley Trail, hikers and their dogs were a frequent site. That facility served us very well for 23 years and as we grew, the building aged. The building eventually became too small to house the growing small animal hospital and so a decision to move was made. This decision was hard in many ways. The building had a distinct country home feeling which we did not want to lose. Our clients and patients were used to the facility and the cost of renovations in a new facility would be high.
We decided to move to the south hill, into the MacDonalds Plaza at the corner of Hwy 50 and McEwan drive. We debated on changing the name (since we would no longer be on the North hill) but decided against it since all our clients knew us by the “North Hill” name. So, in January of 2009, we made the move to the new facility and became North Hill Animal Hospital on the South Hill.
Our old facility had a small reception area, two examination rooms, 4 indoor dog runs and our dental suite was in the xray room (due to regulations for taking dental xrays). Our new facility has a much larger reception area with coffee station and a children’s activity area. We have five examination rooms, a comfort room, an expanded treatment room, a dedicated dental suite, a separate isolation room for contagious animals and those undergoing chemotherapy. The doctors have their own office and there is plenty of space for storage. We have given up the 1 acre of grass and the dogs are now walked on the grass in the enclosed patio. The facility is very spacious and will afford us the ability to grow over the next 20 years.
Dr. David Kerr is the owner of North Hill Animal Hospital and Lisa Kerr manages the hospital. The doctors and staff care deeply about their patients and those families attached to them. In 1989, before the move, North Hill Animal Hospital undertook the task of becoming accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). In Ontario, all veterinary hospitals must be accredited by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), all practices must meet a minimum set of standards to obtain a certificate of accreditation. The AAHA standards are much more than minimum and by obtaining AAHA accreditation we improved the level of practice and service we offer to our clients. Currently only approximately 5% of veterinary hospitals in Ontario are accredited by AAHA.
We at North Hill Animal Hospital treat dogs and cats in families. We provide medical, dental and surgical services to those pets. We believe strongly in prevention and nutrition and so most of what we do is geared around those aspects of the lives of pets. We believe that pets are with us for only the shortest of times and so, keeping them healthy, will allow them to stay with their families as long as possible. We also recognize the strong bond families have with their pets and through education of health and behavior we help to strengthen those bonds.
